Copper plate, coloured, mm 350x475; a fairly good example somewhat stained. From “Theatrum Orbis Terraum” the first modern atlas, collecting maps of the whole world. Before Ortelius there was no regular production of atlases: in Rome Lafrery had published atlases on request, collections of modern maps in book form; Ortelius’s atlas was the first combining regular and uniform size of the maps, elegantly engraved, with a systematic collection of maps. The succes was immediate and went on to 1612, the final edition, including from edition to edition, the latest acquired maps and discoveries. Van den Broecke, 170. State I/III.
