950,00 €
In 4° (255x180 mm), 366 pages, one blank, XXIX, (5). Text in Greek and Latin. Allegorical copperplate vignette on the frontispiece, historiated initials within large woodcut vignettes, friezes and other woodcuts in the text; 8 copperplate engravings in the text by Pieter van der Borcht depicting Roman soldiers with various equipment, a folded f.t. (representing the Iconismus Aciei vulgatae, the preparatory deployment of the army for battle). At the end it includes the supplement entitled “Analecta sive observationes reliquie ad militiam et hosce libros”. Full contemporary soft parchment with manuscript title on the spine. A valuable historical-archaeological work by the great Belgian humanist, Lipsius Justus (1547-1606), who was a professor at the universities of Louvain and Leiden, a friend of C. Plantin and J. Moretus, who published many of his works, including the magnificent Opera Omnia. The first edition of De Militia romana is attributed, based on the privilege, to 1594 (some bibliographers, however, believe it to be from 1596). A good, genuine copy that presents redness typical of the paper of the period, which is more pronounced on some pages. Nicèron XXIV, p. 128, no. 22; Cockle no. 620.
