Bourgoin, including 19 double-sheet, 4 on one page and 2 plans of Syracuse + 1 plate of naval battle between Romans and Carthaginians not indicated in the printed index. Contemporary half calf with corners, double label on spine, neoclassical and floral decorations, grey marbled plates. Abrasions and defects to the binding, some internal paper foxing. Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697-1782) was a French geographer and cartographer. Appointed geographer to the king at the age of 21, he produced 211 maps, considered the best of his time, some of which remained authoritative until the 19th century. He published a general atlas in 1737, historical atlases and also contributed to the Encyclopaedia. He was elected to the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1754 and to the Académie des sciences in 1773.
