In 1886 Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to "rescue" Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in the southern Sudan. Stanley met Emin in 1888, charted the Ruwenzori area and Lake Edward, and saved Emin and his followers in 1890. He then spent in Cairo two months writing the famous account of the expedition, before sailing back to England in April 1890.
