GOLDONI CARLO

Memorie del sig. Carlo Goldoni.
Date: Venezia,Antonio Zatta e Figli,1788
Cod 35274
380,00 €
3 vols. in 8° (180x125 mm); pp. XVI, 392; 352; 292. Portrait of Goldoni engraved by Daniotto on the frontispiece of the first volume. The elegant binding features a small window, title pages with a chalcographic vignette finely engraved on copper by C. Dall’Acqua. Dark brown half-morocco binding with refined ornamentation and a gold-lettered title on the spine, marbled endpapers, and spray-cut edges. The Memoirs were written by the author to recount the story of his life and his theater, and some critics consider them even more interesting than the plays themselves; they were first published in Paris in 1787. They are part of the “Theatrical Works of Mr. Carlo Goldoni, Attorney at Law of Venice,” published in 47 volumes in Venice by Zatta e Figli from 1788 to 1795. (Nino Valeri, *Civiltà moderna*): “It has been repeated by Goldoni’s critics, drawing on Gibbon’s famous judgment, that the *Memoirs* make for more interesting reading than the comedies themselves. The protagonist always appears smiling and serene, from birth to the age of eighty—always a pleasant and accomplished actor in a varied, lighthearted, and cheerful comedy, a curious observer of the world, which he himself conceives as an immense, marvelous, ever-changing stage, within which the most curious and likable characters circulate, seeming tailor-made to serve as models for theatrical characters.” A copy in excellent condition, with full margins and very fresh, well-inked engravings.
