In quarto (270 x 180 mm); 874 pages with 10 woodcut illustrations engraved by Ratti after drawings by Rob. Focosi; beautiful contemporary binding in brown percallina with rich floral decorations and a gold title on the spine and covers.
A splendid copy of the first edition of the “Opere varie,” in a version approved by the author, who also revised certain passages of the prose he deemed unsatisfactory. Commissioned by Manzoni as a complement to the illustrated edition of *I Promessi Sposi*—and entirely similar to it in typographical layout and style—it was published in 8 installments from 1845 to 1855; in 1860, Manzoni had a new 16-page installment added (2 of which are unnumbered), containing the ode “March 1821,” the “Proclamation of Rimini,” and the new table of contents (copies lacking this final installment end on page 864).
Enriched with delightful illustrations depicting scenes from the five acts of the two tragedies within beautiful decorative frames. Excellent condition except for some foxing. Minimal age-related wear to the binding.
Vismara no. 338. Salveraglio no. 4; Parenti no. 6
