Two volumes in 8° (220x144 mm) bound together in a single volume, with a contemporary half-leather binding, title and gold lettering on the spine, pp. VIII, 374, [2]–350, [2]. With three copper-engraved plates folded at the end of the second volume. A fine copy with some typical paper foxing. This highly significant treatise was first published in 1801 and earned the author the title of “father of Italian ophthalmology.” In it, the author reports his observations on various eye diseases, providing information on the blood vessels of the eyes, their cysts, corneal ulcers, staphyloma, and cataracts; he also describes the causes, development, and treatment of tumors and lacrimal fistulas. The iridodialysis procedure is also described here for the first time. The three plates at the end of the volume illustrate some anatomical sections of the eye and the instruments used by the author during surgical procedures. These are copper engravings by Fausto Anderloni based on the author’s drawings. The treatise was reprinted many times, including in other languages, and was long considered the classic text on ophthalmology during the early decades of the nineteenth century.
