2 volumes in 4° (mm 300x220); pp. (8), 255 with 36 plates engraved outside the text (badly numbered 35 as there are two plates 26); pp. 388, (12 of index); with 32 f.t. for a total of 68 plates (36, badly numbered 35, in the first tome and 32 in the second), all engraved in copper outside the text, often folded, some signed by Bassaglia. Elegant coeval half-leather binding with title, friezes and fillets in gold on the spine. A good edition (the first was dated 1826-27) of this famous treatise on architecture, divided into five books. The first volume includes the first two books and deals with earthworks: construction, defence and repair of embankments; form, structure and appurtenances of roads; timber and iron works, properties of timber: cutting, dimensions, designations, transport, conservation, artificial bending, placing, joining, preservation; bridges; dams. The second tome comprises books 3-5 and deals with mural work; natural and artificial stone; vaults; plastering and flooring; supports; maritime constructions; architectural machines and manoeuvres; estimates; earthworks; occupation of farmland and factories. The mathematician and hydraulic engineer Nicola Cavalieri (Civitavecchia, 1788-1867) taught at the Roman Archiginnasio, where he was one of the founders of the School of Engineers, and was an engineer in the department of water and roads.
