A good edition (the first was dated 1826-27) of this famous treatise on architecture, divided into five books. The first volume includes the first two books and deals with earthworks: construction, defence and repair of embankments; form, structure and appurtenances of roads; timber and iron works, properties of timber: cutting, dimensions, designations, transport, conservation, artificial bending, placing, joining, preservation; bridges; dams. The second tome comprises books 3-5 and deals with mural work; natural and artificial stone; vaults; plastering and flooring; supports; maritime constructions; architectural machines and manoeuvres; estimates; earthworks; occupation of farmland and factories. The mathematician and hydraulic engineer Nicola Cavalieri (Civitavecchia, 1788-1867) taught at the Roman Archiginnasio, where he was one of the founders of the School of Engineers, and was an engineer in the department of water and roads.
