Uncommon. One of the first maps published by Robert De Vaugondy, one of the most important French cartographers of the 18th century. The map, made with the Mercator projection, is accompanied by a legend, which lists important political and sociological facts on the map. Excellent example. The map was reprinted by Hendrik De Leth in 1749. All editions of the map are rare. Only one AMPR appearance in the last 20 years. Pedley 17.
Gilles Robert de Vaugondy entered the world of cartography not out of family tradition, but out of personal interest and the emerging opportunities of his time. Born in 1688, he worked at a time when Paris was becoming a central hub for cartographic activities. Gilles often incorporated the latest discoveries of explorers into his maps, making them sought after for their timeliness. His connections were not limited to his inner circle; he often interacted with other important cartographers, staying up to date on the latest techniques and discoveries.
