ORTELIUS ABRAHAM. Antwerp, 1584. Terra Sancta, a Petro Laicstain perlustrata, et ab eius ore et schedis a Christiano Schrot in tabulam redacta
Copper engraving, mm 370x505. From Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum orbis terrarum. The Holy Land described by Petrus Laicstain, a Dutch astronomer who collected topographic material on Palestine during his stay there in 1566. Based on a 9 sheet map of Palestine by Christian Sgrothen (Christian Schrot). Oriented to the east. Shows the shore line from Beirut to Gaza. The shore line is distorted by many fanciful bays and promontories. Wide meanderings of the River Jordan not corresponding to the reality. The title cartouche is surrounded by biblical vignettes. In the bottom left corner the dramatic scene of Jonah and the whale. Latin text on verso: Terra Sancta. Very good specimen, very good dark impression, with a microscopically small restored hole in the centre and slight thinning of the paper on the left at Samochonitis lacus.
Laor, 543C: Van den Broecke.
