FRIES LAURENS

Tabula nova Indiae orientalis & meridionalis.
Date: Vienne in Dauphinè,1522 - 1541
China, South East Asia, Thailand
Cod 7624
Subject: China, South East Asia, Thailand
2.400,00 €
Woodcut, hand color, mm 280x430, no text on verso. One of the earliest acquirable maps of the East Indies. This delineation of Southeast Asia is based largely on the reports of Marco Polo, as is the copious Latin text. A disturbingly domestic cannibal scene highlights one of the dangers to travelers in the region. Laurent Fries’ version of Ptolemy was in many respects a version of Martin Waldseemuller’s Ptolemy of 1513, but this map did not appear in that earlier volume but instead was drawn based on the illustrious 1507 Waldseemuller World map. Very good example.
