This delineation of Southeast Asia is based largely on the reports of Marco Polo, as is the copious Latin text. A disturbingly domestic cannibal scene highlights one of the dangers to travelers in the region. Laurent Fries’ version of Ptolemy was in many respects a version of Martin Waldseemuller’s Ptolemy of 1513, but this map did not appear in that earlier volume but instead was drawn based on the illustrious 1507 Waldseemuller World map.
