WALDSEEMUELLER MARTIN/FRIES LAURENS

Tabula nova utriusque Indiae
Date: Vienne in Dauphinè,1522 - 1541
India, Siam, Thailandia
PB220005
Subject: India, Siam, Thailandia
1.900,00 €
Woodcut, mm 295x440. Based on Waldseemüller's first "modern" map of Asia. It follows that cartography without change but adds an interesting array of vignettes purporting to depict the cultures of the region. The earliest documents recording the Portuguese explorations into the Indian Ocean. The most interesting of these is a scene in Northern India of a goat-like man setting fire to a young woman. The map covers from the Horn of Africa, Saudi Arabia through the Malaysian peninsula and cartographically is a great improvement over Medieval maps of the region. The first issue of this engraving appeared in the 1522 Strasbourg edition of Ptolemy's Geography with subsequent editions in 1525, 1535 and 1541. Very good example with two tiny restored holes and a restoration at centerfold in bottom margin.
