Copper engraving, 355x415 mm. Interesting plate depicting the three conceptions of the universe according to Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe and Copernicus. Taken from Zahn's work "Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica Notabilium ac Mirabilium Sciendorum". Johann Zahn (1641-1707) German mathematician is also known for having created a camera obscura as well as numerous telescopes. The diagrams of the three most important astronomical models are presented in close proximity, framed within a large ornamental cartouche in the Baroque style; Zahn has created a classic chart of data that is pleasing to the eye and allows the observer to compare and contrast the cosmogonies that prevailed at the time. A fine, well-preserved copy with careful small restorations in the lower margin.
