Copper engraving, 410x550 mm, hand-painted. Title printed at the top within a cartouche on the left, editorial data below it. Beautiful map of the continent published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627-1691) in Rome in 1684, based on a model by the French royal cartographer Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville. Taken from the work Il Mercurio Geografico, published by the Roman publishers De Rossi and edited by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, geographer to the Duke of Este. The atlas was published from 1660 to around 1730, with subsequent editions enriched by an increasing number of maps. Sanson's model is very accurate in its geographical and hydrographic details, at the expense of decorative aspects, which in this world map take on a sober tone. Good copy, small defects restored at the central fold.
