HONDIUS JODOCUS/TODESCHI PIETRO

Nova Europae descriptio
Date: Bologna,Sabatini,1670
Europe
Subject: Europe
6.000,00 €
Copper engraving, 440x540 mm. Splendid very rare "carte-à-figures" of Europe, a Bolognese copy of the well-known print by Hondius, published by Sabatini, a publisher of whom very little is known, except through the dedications of the maps he printed. It is in the vein of the Bolognese reproductions of 1670-80, which pirated the beautiful and famous Dutch maps of the period. The border surrounding the card reproduces on each side five costumes of couples from different European nations, at the top six views of cities and at the bottom as many. Clockwise from the top: Venice, Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Germans, Venetians, Gauls, Castilians, Angles, Constantinople, Moscow, Nuremberg, Lisbon, London, Toledo, Greeks, Polonians, Bohemians and Hungarians. Very good specimen with professional restoration to a lack in the upper margin (minimally affecting the inside of the engraved plate). Stopp, 'Die drei Karten vonFrancesco sabatini'; Schilder, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandici , Vol. VI.
