Woodcut, 260x345 mm, hand-painted. Beautiful map of southern Germany from the Rhine to Passau, rotated 180°. Taken from 'Cosmographia universalis', the most important German geographical work after the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493. Sebastian Muenster (1488-1552) is considered one of the most important German humanists and scholars. He was among the first Europeans to understand Middle Eastern languages and cultures and published several works on this subject as well as on theology, geography and chronology.
It has graduated scales in the lateral margins and a very simple orographical layout with molehills; the hydrography is also elementary, denoting large rivers and a few place names dedicated only to the most important cities.
Beautiful example with good margins.
