Woodcut, mm 305 x 420 (excluding margins). Hand-painted in watercolour.
Rare map of the 13 German-speaking Swiss cantons (first published in 1548 and later reprinted in 1587 and 1606) of northern Switzerland. The map is inverted by 180°. Fine specimen with small reinforcement restorations in the margins.
Stumpf did extensive research and also undertook several journeys, of which the one in 1544 to Engelberg and through the Valais seems to be the most important, perhaps because his original diary has been preserved for us. The fruit of his work (completed at the end of 1546) was published in 1548 in Zurich in a huge volume of 934 pages (with many beautiful wood engravings, coats of arms, maps, etc.), with the title Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten, Landen und Voelckeren Chronick wirdiger thaaten Beschreybung. An extract was published in 1554 under the name Schwytzer Chronik. New, greatly expanded editions of the original work were published in 1586 and 1606.
