Burin engraving, 174x243 mm; beautiful impression on coeval laid paper, in very good condition with large margins, signed on plate "Henri Cliven. Inven." on the left and "Philipp. Gall. excud." at right. Rare and celebrated view of Corfu, taken from the collection 'Ruinarum varii prospectus, ruriumque aliquot delineationes', published by Philip Galle in 1587. Second state out of two, with the number added at lower left. Hendrick van Cleve or Cliven III, son and pupil of William van Cleve, moved to Italy in the middle of the 16th century. In addition to a painting depicting a view of Rome, dated 1550, he produced a large number of drawings that would serve as models for the work engraved by Galle. He trained in the circle of Frans Floris, the Flemish master who from around 1540 became the leader of the 'Romanists' in Antwerp. During a trip to Italy, he drew villages and ruins.
