Copperplate, original colour, mm 495x575. Good condition but with professional restoration at centrefold; bottom margin trimmed on/just in the plate mark . One among the most decorative maps by Seutter; it derives from the earlier de Fer's map of Malta: it bears 67 the coats-of-arms from Free Gerard to Frere Anthoine Emanuel de Vilhena, an inset plan of the fortifications surrounding Valletta and an engraving of a ship of the Knights of St. John. The map is oriented with south at the top and the islands of Malta, Comino, and Gozo are described with great detail, including the networks of watchtowers that ringed both Malta and Gozo, prominent churches and aqueducts. From Seutter's Atlas Novus printed between 1728 and 1730. Seutter, one of the most celebrated eighteenth century German mapmakers, after having worked with Homann in Nuremberg, started his own business in Augsburg around 1710.
