Copper engraving, hand painted, mm 188x263, taken from the Venetian edition of the “Geographia” edited by Ruscelli. Nice example taken from the edition of Ptolemy's "Geography", edited by Moleto and published by the Sessa heirs, third edition in the translation by Ruscelli. The map is based on that of Gastaldi of 1548 published in his edition of the "Geography" which was one of the first regional maps of Europe. This third edition, the rarest of the three states, is significantly reworked and includes numerous embellishments and additions of toponyms and a revised topography, such as decorative element, sea monsters or vessels as in ours in the Ionian Sea. It is also one of the earliest maps of Greece.
Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566) was born in Viterbo and is an important writer and publisher, who after studying in Padua spent his career between Rome and Naples, where he died.
