Good impression, printed on heavy paper. Finely engraved map of Europe, showing the Capuchin monasteries around continental Europe, published in “Chorographica descriptio Provinciarum et Conventum minorum S. Francisci Capucinorum” first published in 1643 in Turin by Jahannes a Montecalerio and republished and updated by Giovanni Battista da Cassino.
Rare map of Europe by Johannes A. Montecalerio, noteworthy for its striking appearance and primitive decorations, including sailing ships, compass rose, and interesting little vignettes showing nomadic tribes in Central Asia. The engraving style is bold and unique, not at all similar to contemporary cartographers. A nice example of a map by a map maker who has never appeared in Jolly and for whom Bagrow makes no reference and Tooley offers virtually no information.
