ORTELIUS ABRAHAM
Ducatus Oswiczensis et Zatoriensis descriptio

Copper engraving, 80 x 110 mm, French text on the verso. A pleasant miniature map from “Epitome du Theatre du monde,” a pocket-sized edition of “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum,” the first modern atlas to include maps of every region of the world. This was the brilliant insight of Ortels, later Latinized as Ortelius: prior to that, cartographic production had been irregular and localized, and the few atlases, the so-called “Lafrerian Atlases,” were compiled on request, gathering maps of only certain regions. Ortelius brought together the diverse cartographic production of the period in a single corpus, forming the basis for a hugely successful publishing enterprise, published between 1570 and 1612. A good copy.
