Copperplate engraving, mm 380x440 the map, on sheet mm 530x640 complete with text notes on 8 columns surrounding the card on three sides, hand-painted period. Rare military map rich in information, illustrates the geostrategic situation at the beginning of the Turkish-Russian War (1736 - 1739; also known as the 5th Turkish-Russian War or 7th Turkish-Austrian War) in the area between the Don (Donn) with its right tributary Donez (Donetz) and the Dnieper (Dnieper River). Under the Pragmatic Sanction, Austria was obliged to assist the Tsarist Empire in a war against the Turks. Russia sought access to the Black Sea and control of the Bosporus and Dardanelles. - Russian commander-in-chief Burkhard Christoph Graf von Münnich (1683-1767), a native of Oldenburg, was so successful that he even planned the tsarina's entry into Constantinople. This did not materialize, as the Austrians suffered heavy losses against the Turks and were forced to sign the Peace of Belgrade (1739), which was also joined by Russia, which from then on became Austria's rival in the Balkans. Visible above Azov, on an island in the Danube, is the fortress of St. Anne, where Field Marshal Münnich initiated his military operations. Title cartouche at upper right. Cartouche at lower right with cross-references A-N.
