Copper engraving, 190 x 263 mm, hand-painted. From the edition of Ptolemy's "Geography," edited by Moleto and published by the Sessa heirs. The map is based on Gastaldi's 1548 map published in his edition of the "Geography." This edition is significantly revised and includes numerous embellishments and additions of place names and a revised topography, including many new islands and, as a decorative element, sea monsters. A fine example.
Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566) was born in Viterbo and was an important writer and editor. After studying in Padua, he spent his career between Rome and Naples, where he died.
