Copper engraving, Fine contemporary hand colour. Mm 350 x 495. From the enlarged edition of De Jode’s ‘Speculum Orbis Terrae’ published by his son Cornelis. The outline of the islands is taken from Mercator’s eight-sheet map, 1564, but the
text comes from the George Lily map of 1546. De Jode’s atlas was not a success, losing out to the superior resources and influence of Ortelius, making the De Jode maps harder to find than those of his rival. SHIRLEY: 85 & 119, second state, with “Cum privilegio” added.
