The map is based on modern information provided by Mercator's map of the British Isles of 1564, updated with Saxton's 1579 map and enriched with information from classical authors such as Diodorus Siculus, Pliny, Appian, Tacitus, Caesar, and Strabo. It is taken from the "Parergon" that Ortelius published as a supplement to the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," the first modern atlas, including maps of all regions of the world. The brilliant intuition of Ortels, later Latinized, was precisely this: before then, cartographic production had been irregular and localized, and the few atlases, the so-called "Lafrerian Atlases," were compiled on request by collecting maps of certain areas, ignoring others. Ortelius brought together the diverse cartographic production of the period into a single corpus, forming the basis for a hugely successful publishing enterprise, published from 1570 to 1612.
