Copperplate engraving, with period hand-coloring, 400 x 460 mm. An elegant map based on an original by Magini. A fine specimen, showing some age-related yellowing of the paper and a small restoration along the central fold at the bottom. W. Blaeu, an astronomer and student of Tycho Brahe, established a workshop for the production of globes in 1599; he soon began publishing geographical maps as well, eventually creating the “Atlantis Appendix”—his first atlas—in 1630, followed five years later by the first two-volume edition of the “Atlas Novus.” After his death in 1638, his son Johan oversaw the publication of the renowned 11-volume “Atlas Maior” in 1662. In 1672, a fire destroyed the workshop, bringing the enterprise to an end.
