JANSSONIUS JOANNES

Latium
Date: Amsterdam,1652
Lazio
Cod 7184
Matter: geography
400,00 €
Copperplate engraving, mm 385x515, hand-painted. Pleasing map of the territory of Latium, including the Tiber, Aniene and Liri rivers, in the uncommon textless edition of 1652, enriched with a fine cartouche at the bottom. Taken from "Accurata Orbis antiqui Delineatio" the historical atlas, edited by Hornius and included by Janssonius as volume VI of his "Atlas Novus." The map is a copy of one originally edited by Hornius in the "Parergon" of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum." Janssonius, son-in-law of Jodocus Hondius and brother-in-law of Henricus, collaborated in the publication of atlases after Jodocus' acquisition of Mercator's plates, and from 1638 he was in effect the one who led the publishing enterprise, while Henricus Hondius slowly abandoned the business (from 1646 his name would no longer appear on any title page); he thus turned out to become the great adversary of the Blaeu family in the golden century of Dutch cartography. Perfect marginal copy.
