Copper engraving, mm 350x460, hand painted.
Beautiful map of the territory of Bergamo with two decorative cartouches; one illustrated with the dedication in the upper left and one with the title to "Gio Francesco Sagredo" signed Gio. Antonio Magini" in the upper left; below left the mileage scale.
Taken from "L'Italia" the fundamental first atlas with 61 maps of the whole peninsula, which the geographer and mathematician Magini created at the end of the 16th century, but which, due to his death in 1617, was published posthumously by his son Fabio in 1620 .
Thanks to personal contacts with the institutions and the most important cartographers of the time, Magini had at his disposal cartographic material that was sometimes unpublished or in any case unavailable to scholars. His work forms the foundation of all 17th century cartography, being constantly copied by all subsequent authors. Magini made use of two famous engravers of the time for the engravings: the Belgian Arnoldo Arnoldi and the Englishman Benjamin Wright.
Excellent copy with full margins, two small pinholes and very light stains at the corners.
