MAGINI GIOVANNI ANTONIO

Terra di Bari et Basilicata
Date: Bologna,1620 about
Cod 4427
450,00 €
Copper engraving, 375x462 mm, hand-painted. From "L'Italia" the fundamental first atlas with 61 maps of the entire peninsula, which the geographer and mathematician Magini produced at the end of the 16th century, but which, due to his death in 1617, was published posthumously by his son Fabio in 1620. Magini used two famous engravers of the time for the engravings: the Belgian Arnoldo Arnoldi and the Englishman Benjamin Wright. Thanks to his personal contacts with the most important institutions and cartographers of the time, Magini had at his disposal cartographic material that was sometimes unpublished or otherwise unavailable to scholars. His work constituted the foundation of all 17th century cartography, being constantly copied by all subsequent authors. Good copy, shows small restorations to the central fold.
