Copper engraving, hand-painted period, mm 495x590. Second and rarer version of Sicily, in which the island appears correctly oriented, in comparison with the first version where it appeared with the tip turned downwards by about 40°. At the bottom are panels with plans of Milazzo, Palermo and Catania and a view of Trapani, at the top is a view of Messina. Taken from 'Atlas sive Descriptio Terrarum Orbis'. De Wit was one of the best known cartographers of the second half of the 17th century, he purchased many plates from Blaeu and Jansonius and produced many atlases. Specimen with some normal oxidation of the time, some conservation restorations to cracks due to colour oxidation, trimmed at the frame but with antique paper margins added.
