Copper engraving, contemporary colored at the borders and subsequently finished, 427 x 585 mm. Based on “Mercurio geografico” by the Roman publishers De Rossi and edited by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, geographer to the Duke of Este, based on the surveys of Nicholas Sanson, etched by Giorgio Widman. The atlas was published starting in 1692 with several subsequent editions. Giacomo Cantelli was the first official cartographer at the court of Modena. In 1685, in fact, Duke Francesco II appointed him geographer and curator of the ducal library even though his interest was only in cartography. One of his successors at the head of the library, Ludovico Muratori, although he appreciated him, wrote that “he only knew how to make geographical maps”. Good copy with slight traces of surface soiling and some yellowing; minor restorations to the central fold.
