Copperplate engraving, mm 500x615, hand-painted. Fine specimen, with maps and coats of arms of the various Italian and Levantine localities affected by Venetian rule. A large portion is devoted to explanatory text. Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) Huguenot pastor of Parisian origin was a successful businessman in London, The Hague and Amsterdam. He is best known for the Atlas Historique, published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720. This encyclopedic work was devoted to the history and genealogy of the continents, covering topics such as geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography. Published through the collaboration between Henri, his father Zacharie and his younger brother, also Zacharie, the text was edited by Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer. The maps, made by Henri based on the work of Guillaume Delisle, offer the reader a window into the emerging world of the 18th century.
