Copper engraving, colored, 342 x 455 mm. A pleasing map of the area taken from "Italia," the seminal first atlas with maps of the entire peninsula, which the geographer and mathematician Magini produced in the late 16th century, but which, due to his death, was only published in 1620 by his son. Thanks to his personal contacts with institutions and the most important cartographers of the time, Magini had access to cartographic material that was sometimes unpublished or otherwise unavailable to scholars. His work formed the foundation of all 17th-century cartography, and was consistently copied by all subsequent authors. A fair copy with restorations evident when held up to the light (some holes, reinforcement, and reinstatement).
