Copper engraving, 490 x 630 mm, depicting a map of the Gulf of Villefranche with Cape Ferrat and, in two panels, views of that location and of Nice. William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) was an English sailor and astronomer. He rose to the highest ranks of the navy following his exploits in the Napoleonic Wars. A fine example with foxing on the left side of the upper margin and in the white section at the bottom left.
