Copper engraving, 340x350 mm, from Placido Zurla's "Il mappamondo di Fra Mauro camaldolese", an ancient essay describing and reproducing in reduced size the famous map originally made in 1450: Fra Mauro's pre-Columbian world map is considered the greatest monument of medieval cartography. It is a circular planisphere drawn on parchment and set in a wooden frame, approximately two metres in diameter. A copy of the world map was made by Fra Mauro and his assistant Andrea Bianco, a sailor-cartographer, on commission from King Alfonso V of Portugal. This copy was completed on 24 April 1459 and sent to Portugal, but has not survived to the present day.
Mauro's original map was discovered in the monastery of San Michele in Murano, where the Camaldolese cartographer had his studio. The map now hangs on a staircase in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice, but can be seen upon entering the Museo Correr, where it can be accessed from the easternmost room upon request by museum staff.
This 19th-century Italian edition of the map is one of the few facsimiles of early world maps in circulation and is quite rare on the market. The print is in perfect condition, with only traces of editorial folds.
