Copper engraving on two joined sheets, hand-painted period, mm 490x940. Rare first edition of this unusual large globe in ovoid projection based on J.B.B. D'Anville's 1761 wall chart. Published in conjunction with the publicity of Cook's circumnavigations, this map is one of the best maps showing Cook's three voyages in detail. The map presents Hawaii, here referred to as 'O-Why-Hee', discovered by Cook in 1779. Furneaux and Clarke's explorations between 1768 and 1779 are also represented. Engraved by George Frederic Lotter.
Matthäus Albrecht Lotter (1741-1810), was the heir to one of Europe's most prolific and enduring cartographic dynasties, the son of Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-77), in turn the son-in-law and heir of Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757), who had trained under the eminent cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724).
