Copper engraving, retouched period coloring, 380x540 mm, visible restoration on the reverse with some small professionally restored areas. One of the most sought-after and decorative globes ever produced, surrounded by a rich border featuring portraits of Caesar, Claudius Ptolemy, Jodocus Hondius, cartographer and father of the author, and Gerardus Mercator in the corners, which also serve to place Dutch cartography (exemplified by Hondius and Mercator) alongside the Roman cartographic tradition.Included in “Gerardi Mercatori et I. Hondii atlas.” Second state specimen out of four with date changed to 1641. The globe has unique geographical features and is rich in detail. Rich cartouches and fantastic illustrations make this map an excellent example of Dutch cartography in the Baroque style. Surrounded by mythical scenes and fantastic beasts, the world map itself includes fascinating illustrations of sailing ships and fish, which add further visual interest. In addition to the many beautiful illustrations and cartographic details, some of the geographical features included in this map are noteworthy, such as California as an island, the river networks and lakes of North America, and the coasts of Australia. Shirley, 336; Wagner 308. Schilder “Australia map” 39: “The oldest dated map in an atlas on which a dutch discovery in Australia has been shown cartographically”
