Copper engraving, mm 196x260. From the “Geografia” printed by Sessa heirs. Good proof with some foxing and surface dirt in margins. This double-hemispheric world map by Rosaccio is an Italian version of the Ortelius map as refined by Rumold Mercator in 1587. The major addition is the appearance of a huge Terra Australia (southern continent) in both hemispheres. In North America, California appears correctly connected to the mainland. The St. Lawrence River is prominent, while the Great Lakes are entirely absent. Under the large title America is a legend describing Columbus’ discovery of it in 1492.
