Copper mezzotint engraving printed in contemporary colours retouched by hand, 550x440 mm. In plate lower left J. Ward pinxit, centre London pub. April 25 1792 by T. Simpson...Rustic Felicity. Romantic and delicate scene of a courtyard with a thatched cottage, from which a man stands under an old oak tree, looking left towards a girl who puts her arms around the neck of a tender little donkey, while a little girl sits on a large wicker basket on the left, holding apples to offer to the beast. The mezzotint and watercolour tones give a remarkable rendering of depth, creating a pleasant play of chiaroscuro to the whole pleasant scene. This particular technique allowed a limited number of copies to be printed, as the plate degraded as it was printed. Very good specimen. Minimal restoration at the upper margin.
