Pablo Echaurren was born in Rome in 1951. He began painting at age eighteen and through the intermediary of Gianfranco Baruchello was discovered by critic and gallery owner Arturo Schwarz who promoted his work in Italy and abroad. Between 1971 and 1975 he held exhibitions in Berlin, Basel, Zurich, Philadelphia, New York, and Brussels, and in 1975 he was invited to exhibit at the Paris Biennale. His production early in his career is characterized by minimalist elements, a conceptual approach, a rejection of pictorial conventions and offers an alternative to the idea of the work of art as fetish. Not only a painter, Echaurren has created posters, illustrations, book covers, including that of the best-seller “Pigs with Wings” as well as “metafumics” that investigate the possible relationship between avant-garde and pop-art, in search of that fertile and necessary short-circuit between “high” and “low,” between culture and frivolity, pursuing his own ideal of art open to all. His creativity has also found expressive ground in the field of writing, with the publication of stories and pamphlets on the art world.
