CHOKOSAI EISHO 1785 - 1805 was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He also used the name Shōeidō (昌栄堂).
Original color woodcut engraving from the series “Competition of Beauties...” late 18th century, on washi virgin paper with silicate-based luminous background, treated with shimmering mica, mm 270x170, (probable 19th century print run). Elegant and suave female figure in the foreground with rich drapery with refined floral and geometric decorations, holding a doll in her hands. Researched and sculpted hairstyle. The author gave prominence to the female figures by adopting the genre of ōkubi-e, that is, the “broad portrait” in which only the torso of the depicted subject is depicted, giving it monumentality. It is assumed that Eishō's work competed with that of Utamaro, who was known for his vertical prints of ōkubi-e busts in the bijin-ga genre of portraits of beautiful women.
