Love, Death and the Afterlife. Nuremberg, 1881
Etching, aquatint, plate mm 200x423; sheet mm 305x550
The plate, undoubtedly one of the artist's masterpieces, is No. XII of the "Intermezzi" series, consisting of twelve plates with various subjects engraved in 1881. The curious title of the series derives from the fact that the artist created the compositions in the pauses between one project and another.
Good impression of the 2nd/2nd state printed on japon paper applied on thick white card. On the lower right engraving: "Max Klinger/comp 1879 inc. 1881". Outside the engraving in block letters "MAX KLINGER" and "XII". Very good specimen.
Painter, sculptor, draughtsman, engraver and excellent pianist, he owes his fame above all to his engravings.
He travelled extensively between Italy, France, Greece and England, combining his rich artistic production with an intense theoretical activity (Malerei und Zeichnung, 1881). Klinger is considered one of the Symbolist authors par excellence.
