A work that evokes love and dreams, projecting a romantic vision into the sky above Vence, dotted with visions of lovers, doves and flying human figures
Produced for the catalogue raisonné Chagall Litographe II, a work created by the author in four volumes in collaboration with the printer Fernand Mourlot (to whom we owe the great revival of lithography in the post-war period) and Charles Sorlier (André Sauret publisher) between 1960 and 1974.
Between 1922 and 1985, Marc Chagall produced 1,500 lithographs. Many of Chagall's lithographs were produced using twenty to twenty-five colours and bear witness to the artist's enormous output: no one before him had achieved such perfection, combining unparalleled inspiration with complete mastery of technique. Chagall used lithography not as a means of multiplying his works, but as a necessary tool for a creation that could not be expressed in any other way. Chagall's poetic world is colourful, bright and lively, communicating happiness and optimism, nourished by an imagination that recalls childlike innocence and fairy tales. There are several dominant themes in the various periods of the artist's life, who participated in various avant-garde and artistic movements. The subjects he created, with their simple forms and colourful compositions (like church stained glass windows), are rich in references to his childhood and early 20th-century Russian art, expressed with great dreamlike ability; however, love is often represented as the true protagonist.
