Prophet Daniel with Lions. Very good copy of this original enchanting, particularly finely drawn colour lithograph not numbered, mm 260x355 by Marc Chagall from “Drawings From the Bible”. Paris, Mourlot, 1960. Commissioned by the great Parisian Art publisher and dealer Vollard to create the Bible series, Chagall traveled to Palestine in the Spring of 1931`for inspiration. Chagall notes “Ever since my earliest youth, I have been fascinated with the Bible. I have always believed that it is the greatest source of poetry of all time. I have sought its reflection in life and art. The Bible is life, an echo of nature, and this is the secret I have endeavored to transmit.”Chagall’s style has been described as a hybrid of Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism, and his supernatural subjects are thought to have significantly influenced the Surrealists. He arrived in Paris in 1910 and began experimenting with Cubism, befriending painters Robert Delaunay and Fernand Léger. As in many of his lithographs, Chagall accompanies the subjects, often lovers or the spectacle of the crazy world of the circus (that Chagall loved during his whole lifetime), with organic forms such as flowers and twigs or better animals. His individual way to use deep black lines contrasted with soft colours, enriched the scenes that are enlightened with the right degree of color full of joy and dynamics. Lithography in color by Mourlot Frères, Paris.
