Copperplate engraving, mm 218x296; signed "Johannes Stradda invent." and "Philippus Galle excudit" in lower right-hand plate; very good impression on laid paper; depicts the raid on Milan by the troops of Giovanni de' Medici (1498-1526), known as "of the black bands", a valiant commander of the papal forces. The engraving belongs to a very rare series of 21 plates dedicated to the history of the Medici family (Mediceae Familiae rerum feliciter gestarum Victoriae et Triumphi...). The series is divided into three parts: the first is dedicated to the victories of Charles V and Cosimo de' Medici, the second, consisting of 8 plates of which this is the second, to 'The deeds of arms of Giovanni de' Medici' and the third finally to the coronation of Cosimo de' Medici. The plate was engraved by Galle from a drawing by Jan van der Straet (Johannes Stradanus). Good specimen, traces of old paper tape on the verso of the outer margin Bibliography: Hollstein 462-483, Le Blanc 122-143, Strauss 12-16, Bartsch (Galle) 102.1-16.
