Copper engraving, mm 325x430.
Beautiful engraving with a view of Jerusalem in the center at the time of Jesus with a legend below, surrounded by 14 small views of the holy places visited by Jesus Christ. A good copy despite foxing and creasing.
The journey to Jerusalem was one of the main pilgrimages of Western Christianity, especially after the fall of the Holy City in 1187. In ancient times, those who returned loved to underline the danger and uncertainty of this journey, but nevertheless confirmed the exceptional spiritual character of the places and of the atmospheres. The journey to Jerusalem was truly the best of all, a superlative form of pilgrimage; it was a goal to achieve; its diffusion, its representativeness in prints and travel books has influenced Western thought.
