WOHLGEMUTH MICHAEL – SCHEDEL HARTMANN

Lacedemonia
Date: Nuremberg,1493
Cod 1252
350,00 €
Woodcut, 142x225 mm (sheet 287x440). Sheet XXVIII. Latin text. Hand-painted, it depicts the city of Sparta in a large woodcut (235x220 mm). On the verso of the same sheet are ten vignettes featuring Assyrian kings and Greek gods. Taken from the “Liber Chronicarum,” commonly called the “Nuremberg Chronicle,” it was the first work with realistic depictions of the world’s cities and was enormously successful, so much so that it was considered a milestone in the development of geographical knowledge. It was printed in two editions, the first in Latin in July 1493 in approximately 1,500 copies, and the second, in German, in December of the same year, in approximately 800 copies. The engravings are by Michael Wohlgemuth, Albrecht Dürer’s teacher, his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, and the young Dürer himself. A fine example with attractive coloring.
