Copperplate engraving, 276 x 398 mm, with period hand-coloring. This specimen features cut-outs and applied colored paper behind the windows, specially prepared for viewing through a *Mondo Nuovo* or pantoscope—a popular optical entertainment device used to view "optical views" (printed and hand-colored images) backlit by a candle. These devices were most widespread during the 18th and 19th centuries, primarily thanks to itinerant showmen who traveled to village festivals, charging a fee for viewers to see the images. Such prints—known as *vues d'optique* or optical views—were produced by Remondini in Italy, as well as in Paris and Augsburg. Characterized by simple lines and rapid, bold coloring, they captivate with their immediacy and have been the subject of numerous exhibitions. An elegantly crafted and well-preserved example.
