Copper engraving, 336x477 mm, hand-painted at the time. Beautiful general perspective plan of the city based on the model of the plan engraved by Duperac and published in Rome by Lafrery in 1566; 71 cross-references divided into 12 columns are indicated along the lower edge. Taken from “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”, a milestone in landscape painting, published in different years from 1572 to 1615 ca. in 6 volumes. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was an erudite theologian who undertook numerous journeys for religious and political purposes, during which he was able to collect vast anthropological and geographical material. Franz Hogenberg (ca. 1540 – ca. 1590) was a skilled Flemish engraver. After collaborating with Ortelius on the “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, banned from the Netherlands, he moved to Cologne, where he continued his activity as an engraver. The two collaborated for several years, producing their most famous work, "Civitates Orbis Terrarum." An excellent copy with the German text relating to the view on the verso, slight oxidation on the central fold.
